The sound of a door banging from above and Headmaster Tom has hold of Emma's left arm and is urging her down the steep stone cellar steps. Then telling her to stay in position for ten minutes and not move an inch. He promises to come for her when the time is up. Balancing the paddle on her back, so making certain she can't move without dislodging it, he leaves.
